Remodel A Coat Closet

Remodel a Coat Closet

Coat closets serve as a holding ground for many items. Coats, hats, mittens, scarves, shoes and boots are staples in coat closets. If your current coat closet makes finding the necessities a challenge, a coat closet makeover is in order. Most homes don't offer enough space to expand on an existing coat closet, but making the most of the available space gives the closet a more spacious feel. Increasing the functionality is a primary goal when remodeling a coat closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Assess the current layout and functionality of the coat closet. Decide what works well and which areas need improvement. Consider the types of items stored in the coat closet.

2. Remove all of the items in the coat closet. Pull out any shelves and closet rods in the coat closet. This gives you a clean slate for the coat closet remodel.

3. Clean the floors and walls of the closet thoroughly. Cleaning freshens the closet and helps paint stick better.

4. Paint the inside of the closet with a light color. Paint all of the walls and the ceiling.

5. Inspect the current light fixture. Replace it with a brighter fixture if you find it doesn't cast enough light in the closet. If you don't have a light, hire an electrician to install one for easier location of items in the closet. Another option is to install battery-operated LED lights which don't require any wiring.

6. Decide how you want to store the items in the coat closet. A closet rod, shelf, shoe rack, baskets for smaller items and hooks for scarves and hats are common options. You can also purchase a closet organizing kit for the coat closet. Choose one that works best with your coat closet contents.

7. Install the selected closet organizers. Replace the contents of the coat closet.
