Closet Organization Tips For Kids

Make the most out of your child's closet by adding organizational features like shelving.

A child’s closet can be an unorganized explosion of toys, clothes and other items. Creating an easy-to-use organizational system in your child’s closet will help him or her to get the most out of the space, and make your life easier if you are not constantly trying to find something. Making the most out of closet space by incorporating shelving and other space-saving ideas can reduce clutter in the child’s room and make the overall living situation more organized. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelving

Incorporating additional shelving into your child’s closet can help to create a more structured space and allow for more items to be neatly stored in the closet. The addition of shelving that is lower in the closet is also beneficial because a smaller child will be able to reach it without assistance. You can incorporate shelving at the top of the closet to store extra blankets, sheets, pillows or items that your child will not need immediate access to. Paint the shelves a solid color or with a design to add a splash of color to the closet. You can stack storage bins in the shelving to maximize space or put the clothing and items directly onto the shelves.

Storage Bins

Add colorful storage bins with labels to encourage your child to put items back where they belong. These can hold clothing, books, toys and any other items you need to store. Using bright fun colors and bins with see-through plastic or shapes cut out so you can readily see what is inside the bins. Hollowed out storage cubes are also beneficial because you can store items inside and on top of the bins.

Shoe Rack

Save space and keep all of your child’s shoes organized in pairs by using a shoe rack. This can be a unit that sits on the floor of the closet and has a cubbyhole for each pair of shoes, or a cloth over-the-door shoe rack that has a pouch for each shoe. This will help reduce clutter in the closet, and make your child’s shoes easier to find.

Hooks and Peg Board

Add a peg board with small hooks to the back or on of the side walls in the closet. Martha Stewart Living recommends this as a great place to hang hats, sunglasses and sporting equipment, as well as any other oddly shaped items. Incorporate other hooks in the closet to hang larger items such as winter coats or a bathrobe. You can also designate a specific hook for "tomorrow’s outfit" to encourage your child to plan ahead and be organized.

Space Saver Bags

To increase space and reduce clutter in a child’s closet, use vacuum-packed space saver bags to shrink and store bulkier items like blankets that are not being used. This can also be done with seasonal clothing to keep them clean and out of the way during the off-season.
