Change A Closet Into Living Space For Kids

Whether pressed for space or just desiring a personal and quiet work area, a closet can open up a whole realm of possibilities for a kid's bedroom. This project will give a child her own area for artistic endeavors, homework and craft projects. It will also provide a space and system for the organization and containment of various supplies and add a useful purpose to some unused space in a closet. It can also be decorated and completely customized for specific tastes and needs, as well as for available space. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Paint the closet walls if necessary or desired. Decorate to individual taste and desired style.

2. Hang the closet rod for clothes in the desired location. Hang the spring tension rod approximately 1 foot in front of the closet rod and at a distance of 2 to 4 inches from the ceiling.

3. Hang the sheet over the tension rod and overlap approximately 2 inches of material over the rod. Attach the adhesive backed hook and loop tape to the sheet. Place a strip of the hook side of the tape from edge to edge on the body of the sheet and a strip of the loop side of the tape to the overlapped portion of the sheet. The sheet now hangs over the top of the rod like a curtain, hiding the clothing from view.

4. Place the desk into the desired location as everything else will be positioned around this piece of furniture. Insert seat into position under desk.

5. Mount or place the chosen shelving into place above or on either side of the desk.

Create storage by using any chosen container such as colorful baskets, plastic milk crates or canvas boxes.

Hang the chalkboard and the magnetic memo board according to the directions on the individual products.

Select a lighting fixture such as a lamp or a hanging light. Either will give you a lot of flexibility with no complicated installation. A closet is usually a poorly lit room and you should ensure that there is adequate lighting.

Place bins for paper under the desk. Stow paintbrushes in a plastic coffee container. Hide crayons, markers, pencils and colored-pencils in a plastic diaper wipe container. Use empty nut cans to store pencil-top erasers, staples, paper clips and rubber bands.
