Organize A Laundry Closet

Most people aren't fond of laundry, but having an organized space in which to do it can make the chore more pleasant. Even a small closet can become a neat, organized and efficient workspace. Having all your necessities in reach and spaces for folding, sorting and hanging means you spend less time looking for what you need, and more time outside your laundry closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Clean out your laundry closet. Take everything out that isn't laundry related and organize whatever you can't move so that it's neat and out of the way.

2. Consider your laundry closet, both the space it provides and what you need it to be. Extra storage can be accomplished with a simple shelving unit, and drying space can be created with a drying rack. You can cover your utility sink with a sheet of plywood and create a workspace for folding, sorting or pre-treating.

3. Organize your items into frequent use and not so frequent use piles. Frequent use items such as detergent, fabric softener, stain removers and bleach should all be in easy reach, while things like clothespins, special care detergents or old rags should be stored where they're out of the way, but not hard to get to.

4. Store like items in labeled baskets or boxes. All your clothespins should be in one place, as should all your hangers, stain removal pens, cleaning supplies, ironing supplies and extra buttons. Keep closest those things you use most frequently.

5. Hold any items that need to be dry cleaned on a separate drying rack. That way you can separate them out from the beginning and prevent washing mishaps. When you have time to drop them off, they'll all be in one place, ready to go and easy to grab.

6. Store items closest to the space in which they'll be used. Detergents go near the washing machine, fabric softener sheets go near the dryer and ironing supplies should be near your ironing board.

7. Keep a bottle of household cleaner and a few rags in your laundry closet so that you can wipe down appliances and sinks or clean up spills with a minimum of fuss. Place a small waste bin in the room, for things like dryer lint and empty bottles.

8. Place a list of needed supplies on the wall, and if you run out of something while doing laundry, add it to the list.
