Organize A Tiny Closet

Two hanging bars give you more room for clothes.

Tiny closets pose a number of organization problems. They normally will not hold all of your clothing and shoes, and can lack the appropriate shelving. This can result in your clothes shoved onto hangers too tightly to organize and shoe boxes stacked on top of each other on the floor. There are simple steps you can take to organize even the smallest closet space so you can fit your items in it with ease. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove all the items from the closet. Begin sorting the items, making a "give-away" pile and a "trash" pile, along with a "keep" pile. If you have not worn a piece in more than a year, it does not fit or it is torn or stained beyond repair, put it in the "give-away" or "trash" pile. Do the same for any miscellaneous items stored in the closet, such as old holiday gifts or camping equipment.

2. Separate any items that do not belong in that closet into another pile. If you are organizing a tiny bedroom closet, you do not need to store old pictures or household decorative accessories in it. Decide on the closet's purpose and remove everything else.

3. Vacuum the bottom of the closet to remove any dry-cleaning tags, dust or other debris.

4. Hang an over-the-door shoe rack on the back of the closet door. These racks are cloth and contain rows of pockets for storing shoes. Put your shoes in the rack and throw away any shoe boxes. This will clear your closet floor.

5. Install a hanging bar halfway between the floor and the original hanging bar. The installation process will vary with the kind of bar you select. Hanging an additional bar will double your clothing storage.

6. Hang up the clothes from your "keep" pile, grouping them by type, such as shirts, pants and skirts.

7. Put any boots that don't fit in the shoe rack on the floor, under the clothes hanging from the second bar.
