Build A Garment Rack

PVC pipe elbow of the type used to make a garment rack.

Simple garment racks are very helpful in laundry rooms and storage areas where out-of-season clothing is kept. By storing clothing inside garment bags or plastic bags and hanging them on hangers on a rack, the garments will hold their shape better and be faster to locate and move when you need them. Assembling a simple garment rack out of PVC pipe is a project well within the abilities of most crafters, making this a great project for a weekend afternoon. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure and cut four pieces of 1-inch PVC pipe to 36 inches long using a hacksaw and a saw box. Cut four pieces of 1-inch PVC pipe to 12 inches long.

2. Apply PVC glue to the outside ends of one 36-inch pipe. Apply PVC glue to the inside of an elbow. Slide the elbow onto the pipe firmly so that the glue attaches them together. Repeat for the other side of the pipe with a second elbow. This is the top rail of your garment rack. Lay the pipe down and make sure the elbows are even and point the same direction.

3. Glue the inside of one elbow and the outside edge of a second 36-inch pipe. Insert the pipe into the elbow. Repeat with a third pipe and the second elbow. These will be the uprights of the rack. Set these pieces aside for later.

4. Glue an elbow onto one end of each of the four 12-inch pipe sections. These are the legs. Glue two 12-inch pipe sections into one four-way connector. Aim the elbows down. Repeat this step with the other 12-inch pipes and the other four-way connector.

5. Fit and glue the last 36-inch pipe into the four-way connector so that the last connector on the four-way is facing upward when the leg elbows on the 12-inch pipes are facing downward. Glue the 36-inch pipe into both four-way connectors. Apply glue to the top four-way connectors on both sides and to the ends of the two upright pipes you glued earlier. Insert the 36-inch upright pipes into the top four-way connectors, and your rack is done. Allow the glue to dry for three to four hours before using the rack.
