Build Corner Storage

Build a corner storage unit for your smaller rooms.

Corner storage solutions are ideal for small spaces, where additional storage or shelving is needed. A corner storage closet can provide you with the ability to store taller items, such as brooms or vacuum cleaners. Building a corner storage unit from scratch requires preparation, as you want to ensure that the unit can fit into your chosen corner with the proper angle. While it may be a project that takes a few hours to complete, a corner storage unit can give you years' worth of storage possibilities. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Place the protractor in the corner where you are placing the storage unit to ensure that the corner is an even 90 degrees. Write down the angle if it is different than 90 degrees.

2. Place the end of the measuring tape in the corner and measure horizontally along one of the walls in the corner. This is to determine how big the corner unit needs to be. It will be the same on the second wall. Place the end of the measuring tape on the floor and measure vertically upward to determine the height of the unit. Write these measurements down.

3. Draw the pieces needed for the corner storage on the plywood using a pencil, ruler and the measurements from the previous step. Draw two identical pieces for the sides measuring the height and the wall width measurements. Add an extra 1/2-inch in the overall width on one of the panels. Use the table saw to cut them out.

4. Place the two side panels to create a 90-degree angle, so the larger piece overlaps the end of the smaller piece. The pieces should each be equally long on the walls. Insert 1-inch screws into the overlapping panel with a mechanical screwdriver.

5. Create a 45-degree angle on the ends facing you on both pieces. The angles should be opposite of one another, so a closet door can be attached in a later step. Use the jigsaw to cut the angles and sandpaper the cuts afterward.

6. Lay the L-shaped corner storage unit down. Measure the distance between the two ends just cut along with the wooden ends of the side pieces, so you have a triangle. Draw two identical triangles on the plywood with a pencil, so you have a top and bottom piece for the unit. Cut the two pieces with the table saw and sandpaper the edges. Install the triangles on the both ends of the L-shape closet using 1-inch screws and the mechanical screwdriver.

7. Flip the corner storage closet right side up. Measure the front perimeter of the closet to get the proper measurements for the closet door. This includes the height and width of the front of the corner closet. Use the pencil and measuring tape to draw the closet door on a new piece of plywood. Cut the door out with the table saw and remove splinters with the sandpaper.

8. Attach the three hinges to one of the long sides of the door using the 1/4-inch screws and a screwdriver. The hinges should be spaced at least 2 inches apart, but spread them evenly apart to give the closet door support. Hold the door up to one of the sides of the corner closet, so the hinges go inside the closet. Install the hinges to the inside of the closet using the 1/4-inches and the screwdriver. Ensure the door is properly attached before using.
