Create A Bed With Storage Drawers

People have been using underneath of their beds as storage space for years. However, building drawers underneath can provide not only storage space, but can replace a section of your closet, or your chest of drawers. This can create more room in your home and bedroom . Using some patience and precise measuring, you can create a base frame for your mattress, as well as a collection of organized drawers. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove your mattress from the bed frame. Measure the bed frame so you know what measurements you need to create for your bed frame and storage drawers. Remember, the base board will need to be about an inch and a half larger than the mattress so the drawers are accessible. Add on the extra inches for this.

2. Remove the current bed frame and keep aside in case you need more measurements. Later, this can be donated or disposed of.

3. Obtain the drawer boxes first. For queen and king-size beds, six drawers is the best fit with still providing good storage space. This way, there will be three drawers on each side. The easiest way to find these are to borrow them from another piece of furniture that you do not want to use anymore. If this is not an option, you can make them yourself. The measurements for your drawers will depend on your bed size.

4. Use four pieces of wood planks for the sides, two smaller ones for the front and back, and two slabs a little larger for the sides. Screw or glue these drawers together piece by piece, until it creates the frame of a drawer. Use a piece of plywood for the bottom of the drawers, securing it with screws or glue to the bottom of all four pieces of wood. You will be attaching the drawer runners to these later.

5. Construct the base of the bed next, which is where the drawers will slide into. This wooden frame will be the largest part of your work, and will be the support system for the mattress. Use four sturdy pieces of wood for the frame identical to the measurements of your last bed frame, that are taller then the drawers so the drawers slide in and out without difficulty. The pieces of wood should be at least a 18 inches wide to provide substantial space between the bottom of the bed and the floor. There will be two pieces to match the length of the bed, and there will be two shorter pieces for the top and bottom of the bed frame.

6. Screw each of these four pieces together, one by one. Start with screwing the smaller bottom piece to the left piece of the frame, then screw the top wood piece into this. Lastly, screw the right frame piece into the top and bottom pieces. Place one more thick piece of wood across the middle of the frame, wide side down, and screw into place for extra support.

7. Make the sections that will support the drawers so they can slide in and out. Use wood planks that are about half the size of the five large frame pieces. Place these across the inside of the frame where the drawers will be. Secure one long piece down the middle of the frame, so that with the sturdy centerpiece it creates a cross-like shape. Screw each small piece the opposite direction to the bottom. Use another small piece in the same way at the top. When complete, the frame will look like a tic-tac-toe board with all of the wooden planks. Make sure all the planks are secured to each other to create a sturdy frame.

8. Cross-section the wood with the drawer tracks and screw them in. Next, secure the drawer runners to the drawers you created earlier. Make sure that the runners and tracks connect and run smoothly.

9. Place the mattress back onto the frame with storage drawers. Fill the drawers with clothing, antiques that need to be stored, or whatever is convenient for you.
