Size A Sliding Door

Measure the opening for your sliding door to ensure the door fits properly.

When installing or replacing sliding doors, the first and most important step is measuring the opening where you will install them. Taking the time to perform this step correctly will save you a lot of headache later on during installation. Standard sliding door widths are 24 inches, 30 inches, 36 inches and 40 inches. The standard height for a sliding door is 96 inches. If you need doors smaller or larger than these standards, you will need to custom order your door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the height from floor to ceiling. This measurement should be taken directly in front of where the doors will be installed and should be done in three places: on each side of the opening and in the center of the opening.

2. Measure the width of where the sliding doors will be. Make sure you take this measurement from one side jamb to the opposite side jamb.

3. Take into account the height of the door track on the bottom of the door. The track is generally 3/8-inch tall. If your height of your door space is more than the standard height and you do not wish to custom order, you can install a height reducer. The reducer can subtract between 5 and 18 inches.
