Cut A Steel Rod

Cut steel bars with a carbide blade.

Steel reinforced rods, commonly called rebar, are used as structural foundation supports for many commercial buildings because of the strength of the metal. Steel rods are used in home construction as well and can pose a challenge to cut. The key to successfully cutting through a steel rod is to use the proper type of cutting device instead of standard saw blades. Standard saw teeth will bend due to the strength of the steel. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Set up a chop saw with a carbide tipped blade on a table or work bench using the manufacturer's instructions to secure it properly.

2. Use a tape measure and a black marker or pencil to place a line on one side of the steel rod in the location where you want to cut it.

3. Put on safety glasses and ear plugs and place the steel rod onto the work surface under the saw blade.

4. Secure the steel rod to the work table so that the line is directly under the blade of the saw. Most chop saws have a way to secure the item under them. If your saw does not, then use one or two pipe vices to wrap around the pipe and fasten it to the table.

5. Tun on the power to the chop saw and grasp the handle on top of the blade. Lower the blade down slowly until it cuts through the steel rod.

6. Turn the chop saw off, remove your safety glasses and ear plugs, and unclamp the steel rod from the table.
