Lay Out A Corner Closet With Wood Shelving

It is easy to install wood shelving in a small corner closet.

A corner closet is ideal to use wooden shelving in, since it is not too big to support the shelving without additional central supports. A corner closet is easier to build because you only need to make two additional walls. The closet will make a good linen closet or storage closet. You can determine how many shelves you have, so that it works perfectly for your needs. A corner closet can be put in nearly any room without disrupting the flow of the house. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the area you want your closet to be. The walls of the closet need to attach to already existing studs. Mark the studs with the stud finder, and base your plans on the studs closest to the size you want your closet to be. Measure the height for the studs by measuring from floor to ceiling and subtracting 4 inches. Measure the width and height of the framed door.

2. Cut the wood for the wall frames with the circular saw. You will need two pieces that are the length of each wall you are building. These pieces will be the top and bottom of the wall frame. You will need enough studs to put on each end of the wall frame and every 16 inches across the length of each wall frame. You will need one piece that is the width of the door frame.

3. Build the wall frames by laying out the top and bottom pieces of the wall frames, as well as a stud for each side. Nail them together, so that the 4-inch side will go against the floor and ceiling. Make sure the outside of the frame is square and put in the studs every 16 inches. When you build the wall frame with the door, leave out the studs where the door will go, and put one stud on each side of where the framed door will slide into place. Then nail the piece that is the width of the door frame in at the correct height, so that the door frame will just slide into place underneath it.

4. Put the wall frames up by nailing them into the marked studs on the wall every 18 inches from floor to ceiling. Nail the frame into the floor and ceiling on either side of each stud. Use a handsaw to nail out the bottom of the wall frame where the door will go. Hang the drywall on the interior and exterior of the closet. Use drywall screws and screw into each stud along the top, bottom and center of each piece. Cover the screw holes with drywall cement. Use the cement and drywall tape to seal the seams. Sand it and paint the walls. Use the stud finder to find and mark the studs on the interior of the closet.

5. Prepare the wooden shelves for the closet. Measure the interior walls of the closet for the depth and length. Subtract 3 inches from the depth to find the size of your shelves. Cut the plywood so that the length is the depth of your closet minus 3 inches, and the width is the same width as the interior of the closet. Cut one 2-by-4 per shelf that is the length of the width of the closet. You need two pieces per shelf that are the length of the depth of the closet minus 5 inches. The 2-by-4s will be the supports for the shelves. The shelves should not more than 3 feet long. Sand and paint the wood for the shelves.

6. Put baseboards in around the bottom of the closet along the exterior and interior of the walls. Nail the 2-by-4s you cut for support pieces into place along the inside of the closet, at the height you want the shelves. Be sure each support is level before you nail it into place. The supports need to be nailed into the studs. Place the shelves on top of the supports and nail them into place in each corner.

7. Install the door by sliding the frame into place, and making sure it is level and that the door can swing freely. Use a mallet to bang the door into place until it is level. Nail the trim into place around the door frame to finish the closet.
