Install Wooden Closet Rods

Install a wooden closet rod in your closet to add more space.

Install a wooden closet rod in your closet space so that you can hang clothing on hangers. Wooden closet rods are an attractive option to use because of the natural warmth of the wood's color and grain pattern. Closet rods are installed using closet rod flanges. They come in a wide variety of materials from wood to metal. Select flanges to match your metal hardware or select wooden flanges to complement the wooden closet rod. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Slide a stud finder on each wall where the ends of the rod will be mounted. Mark the location of the stud on each wall that is nearest to the desired location for the rod, using a pencil.

2. Ask a helper to hold one-half of the closet rod flange set on the wall at each stud marking at the approximate height that you desire to mount the rod. Place one end of the rod into the closed flange and pivot the rod down into the opened flange to rest it in place while your helper holds the flanges against the wall.

3. Place a level across the top of the rod and have your helper adjust the position of the flanges until the rod is level. Remove the level and mark the mounting hole locations in the flanges onto the wall. Remove the closet rod and have your helper set the flanges aside.

4. Position one flange against the wall so that the mounting holes line up with the pencil marks. Drive the screws that were included with the flange set through the mounting holes into the wall stud with a screw gun. Repeat this process to install the remaining flange. Make sure that the U-shaped flange has the opening facing up when you install it.

5. Place one end of the closet rod into the closed flange and pivot it down into the open U-shaped flange to rest it in place.
