Make A Deep Closet More Usable

Make your closet user-friendly with organization.

Getting the most out of closet space is important, especially when the closet is shared with a spouse or sibling. Take a survey of your needs to determine if most of your clothing is hung or folded. Knowing what type of storage space you actually need will help you decide make your closet more usable. Rather than feeling attacked by a cluttered mess of shirts and overflowing shelves, make your deep closet work for you. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Attach one closet rod the full length of the longest wall. Attach the rod high on the wall but at a height that you can reach comfortably. Rods come packaged with brackets and screws. Measure and mark the wall for the correct placement of the rod. Use the appropriate screwdriver to attach the rod.

2. Hang a garment on the top rod, and place a second rod beneath the garment. Distance the low hanging rod just below the garment so the garment has room to hang without touching the second rod. To allow dresses or slacks to hang freely from the top rod, do not extend the lower rod the length of the wall. Leave a space of 3 feet at the end of the low rod to accommodate long garments.

3. Add a full-length shelf above the top rod; use the brackets and screws included with the shelf to attach the shelf. Use the shelf to store bins of seasonal clothing. Mark the bins with labels to indicate the clothing and the person who wears the clothing.

4. Hang a shoe bag on the short wall at the end of the closet. Screw hooks into the studs of the wall to attach the shoe bag. Shoe bags are clear plastic, have pockets and take little space.

5. Attach wire shelving along the second long wall. Space the shelves 18 to 24 inches apart to ensure baskets and bins fit neatly on the shelf.

6. Replace low-wattage light bulbs with higher wattage to ensure the best lighting possible. Use bulbs with 60 or 75 wattage for adequate lighting.

7. Use small baskets to hold belts and purses. Measure the height of the tallest basket and allow room for it when attaching extra shelving.
