Install Bifold Interior Doors

A plumb bob helps you line up the top and bottom hardware.

Bifold doors fold out of the way, letting you view all the contents of your closet. They don't require as much space as a door that swings open. You'll be happiest with bifold doors that open and close smoothly, so you'll want to pay close attention when attaching the hardware to the doors and hanging the track that the doors will hang from. You can gain additional stability by using heavy-duty hardware instead of the hardware that comes with your bifold doors. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Analyze the instructions that came with your track hardware kit for where you should attach the pivot hardware on the top and bottom on the door. Measure the specified distance from the edge on the door in pencil, using a measuring tape, and screw the pivot hardware to the doors with a power drill. The pivot hardware includes the round pieces that slide in the track and the pins that the door pivots on when you open and close it. If you are installing a pair of bifold doors, install the hardware on both doors.

2. Measure the top of the door opening and cut the track with a hacksaw to fit if necessary. Slide the metal hanging hardware into the track, following the instructions that came with your track hardware kit. These pieces of hardware will guide the hardware attached to the doors as you open and close them.

3. Hold the track up to the top of the doorway and position it so that both sides are the same distance from the front of the doorway. Mark the doorway in pencil to help ensure that you don't move the track out of alignment as you install it. Attach the track to the top of the doorway by driving screws through the pre-drilled holes in the track, using a power drill.

4. Place the floor bracket the distance from the door jamb specified in the instructions provided with your track hardware kit. Hang a plumb bob from the track over the floor bracket. Hold the top of the plumb line halfway into the depth of the track and line the floor bracket's pin hole to the plumb bob. Trace the floor bracket with a pencil to ensure that you don't move it during installation. Drive screws through the pre-drilled holes in the floor bracket into the floor. If you are installing a pair of bifold doors, install floor brackets on either side of the doorway.

5. Slip the door's bottom pivot point into the socket in the floor bracket. Insert the door's top pivot point into the pivot socket in the track. Your track socket may have a lever that locks the pivot pin in place. Refer to the instructions that came with your track hardware kit. If you are installing a pair of bifold doors, attach the second door in the same manner.

6. Close the bifold doors and reposition the hardware you slid into the track so that the door is evenly positioned in the doorway. Tighten the hardware when you are satisfied with the door position, following the instructions that came with your track hardware kit.

7. Close the bifold doors while you are inside the closet. Attach the door aligner brackets to the inside edge of each door, 6 inches above the bottom edge of the doors. These brackets catch when you close the doors, and keep the doors flush. Skip this step if you are installing only one bifold door.

8. Attach the doorknob to the bifold door by slipping the bolt through the pre-drilled hole in the door and manually screwing the doorknob onto the bolt. Repeat for the second door if you are installing a pair of bifold doors.
