Create A Minimalist Wardrobe

Create a Minimalist Wardrobe

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, one of the definitions of "minimalism" is the "use of the fewest and barest essentials or elements, as in the arts, literature, or design". You may be interested in having a minimalist wardrobe because it is low maintenance. Perhaps you notice that people in minimalist clothes tend to look simple and sophisticated. Applying minimalism to your wardrobe is about choosing quality over quantity. It's not just about black and white. Minimalism is about knowing yourself and exactly what you need. It's also about shrinking your wardrobe down to a few quality pieces that you'll frequently mix-and-match. Consider applying minimalist principles into your own closet.

Instructions

1. Clean out your wardrobe. Cutting down your closet to the essentials is key in building your minimalist wardrobe. Ask yourself how often you use an item. Toss the ones out that you haven't used within the last year.

2. Organize your wardrobe. There are numerous ways to arrange the remainder of your wardrobe. Find the best method that works for you. You can choose to box items that are out of season. Organize your clothing by color, type or shape.

3. Take a pen and paper and create a list. Plan a list of clothing essentials that you may currently be missing. Chances are that you already know what you are lacking in your closet.

4. Evaluate your life and your clothing needs. Everyone is different. The Greek stoic philosopher Epictetus wisely said, "Know first who you are and then adorn yourself accordingly". Some women do not need the "Little Black Dress." Their lifestyle simply doesn't require one or it may not be of their taste. Think about your daily activities, events and occasions when analyzing your wardrobe requirements.

5. Find inspiration before purchasing. Window shop online or in actual stores. Look around for outfit ideas with minimalist elements that can easily mix-and-match.

6. Know your figure. Find clothing with a great fit. Well-fitted clothing makes a difference in your overall look.

7. Choose quality over quantity. Be conscious of fabric and care. Carefully inspect every piece. Make sure this item will stay with you for the long run. This should be a rite of passage before entering your wardrobe.

8. Purchase neutral colors. Neutral colors are easy to mix-and-match. The ability to mix and match items can create a plethora of outfits which is signature to a minimalist wardrobe. Also, color blocks are a common motif in minimalist clothing.

9. Choose simple pieces. Look for clean lines and minimal detail.

10. Find pieces with several purposes. Some designers or brands offer clothing that can readily transform from a top to a dress. You may even find a top that is reversible. Clothing that can transform offers different outfit opportunities.
