Even though most custom closets, such as those manufactured by the California Closet company, are installed by professionals, the modular structure makes them simple enough to assemble on your own. The California Closet system is based on a horizontal steel rail, from which everything else hangs. All the components either slide or snap into place using a series of pegs inserted into the sides of the vertical supports. The system comes with all parts needed to complete installation. Instructions
1. Screw the horizontal rail into the studs of the closet wall with a two-inch tempered screw. The rail should be positioned high enough that the vertical sections will be clear of the floor. Snap a rail cover into place once it is secure, to cover up the unsightly screws.
2. Hang vertical partitions from the horizontal rail, hooking the suspension brackets over the rail's upper edge. Insert pegs into the top and bottom holes on the partitions and set cam-lock shelves (those with rotating latches on the underside) onto these, screwing them into place to provide strength to the closet system. Only one locking shelf is absolutely required per vertical column, so you can leave the bottom open or locate the shelf in the middle of the vertical supports if you so desire.
3. Insert pegs into the vertical partitions' holes at the heights you want, and slide shelves into place on top of them. This structure allows you to rearrange your closet at any time by simply sliding the shelves out again and moving the pegs. The plastic end caps for the hanging rods also snap into the peg-hole system, requiring nothing further than setting the rod into place. Rails for drawers can also be placed on these pegs to make a dresser-like area in your closet.
