ShelfTrack wire shelving is versatile and easy to install.

The ClosetMaid ShelfTrack system of wire shelving is versatile and relatively easy to install. It features fixed wall mountings. but leaves the brackets and shelves easy to move in order to suit changing storage needs. ShelfTrack systems are perfect for closets, garages, pantries and laundry rooms. A few common household tools and a free afternoon are all that are required for installation, and the materials are more affordable than many other closet systems. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Use a stud finder to locate studs and a level to mark the full run of each stud.

Measure the desired height and width of the storage area as well as the number of shelves desired. Use the stud finder to locate the wall studs and mark with a pencil. Place the level vertically against each pencil mark and draw a line to indicate other locations that can be used for screws.

2. The hang track needs to be installed at least as high as the top shelf, but attaching to the sill plate at the top of the wall provides more support.

Attach the hang track to the top of the wall by drilling one screw into one of the middle holes. Place the level against the bottom of the hang track and keep it even as you attach screws into the rest of the mounting holes. Cut the hang track with a hack saw or metal grinder if necessary.

3. Install the first vertical bracket standard by hooking it into the hang track and sliding it over one of the stud lines. Use the level to ensure that it remains straight and drive a screw into each mounting hole. Attach standards on both ends of the hang track and also every 16 to 24 inches across the wall.

4. Bolt cutters will quickly cut the wire shelving to size. Be sure to cover the sharp ends with plastic caps.

Place brackets at the desired height of each shelf on all of the standards. Make sure that the brackets are as long as the desired depth of the shelves. Cut the shelves to length using bolt cutters or a hack saw. Place plastic end caps on the end of each wire to avoid injury and wall damage. Attach the shelves by sliding them over the brackets and attaching into the bracket clips. For best results, point the back of the shelf at a 33-degree downward angle, attach the back of the shelf first and then snap the front of the shelf in place.

5. Mount wall clips to the front ends of each shelf for extra support. This can only be done if the shelving is being installed wall to wall. Use the stud finder to locate studs on the side walls and mark their locations. Attach the clips to the end of the shelf and drive screws through the mounting holes into the wall.
