Ideas For A Hallway Closet

Create a little more space in your closet.

Don't resign yourself to a lackluster hall closet when you can convert it to fit your needs. Whether you need to be able to get in and out of it in a hurry, double the amount of items you can fit comfortably in it, or turn it into an entirely new space, all it takes is a little ingenuity. Does this Spark an idea?

Organize for fast mornings

Finding an umbrella amidst chaos during your morning rush can get your entire day off to an aggravating start. The solution is a well-organized closet where everything you need is within easy reach. A tall bucket can work as an umbrella stand, while a rack with a tray underneath can hold wet rainboots without getting everything else in your closet dirty. If you can, build shelving on which you can stack bins and baskets to hold various items such as gloves and hats. If you're really ambitious, you can install a closet organizational system--they don't have to just be for bedroom closets. Finally, attach a full-length mirror to the back of the door so you can give yourself one last glance before you leave the house.

Make more room

Hall closets can quickly become cluttered, which is a particular problem if you have a small space. Look for thin velvet-lined hangers that will take up less room on your closet rod and also help prevent outerwear from falling on the floor. Affix a key rack and hooks on the door to hold pieces you need to reach quickly, such as purses or a dog leash. Install shelving above the hanger rod to store items you don't need to reach quickly. Shelving under where your longest coat reaches can double or triple your storage space. A hanging canvas sweater or shoe rack can hold various outerwear accessories such as hats and gloves.

Create an office

If you have a wide closet, you can transform your hall closet into your own home office. Take out the curtain rods, leaving shelving in place to help hold office accessories. Line the back and side walls with wallpaper to make it seem cozier. Mount corkboard or a pegboard to the inside of the closet doors so you can tack up notes and a calendar, as well as hang file holders and accessories such as scissors. Look for a slim enough desk and rolling chair so that you can easily close the door when you need to. It can be tricky to do wiring, so a laptop may be your best bet.
