Start Up A New 3d Max In Opengl Or Software

If your graphics card works better in OpenGL, you can use that standard instead.


Some graphics cards perform better using the OpenGL standard within 3D Max, while others work more smoothly with Direct3D. Sometimes a card will encounter problems with the Direct 3D standard, leading to display issues or 3D Max's failing to open. Changing the graphics settings to OpenGL can resolve the issue. Use software mode only for problem solving.


Instructions


Running 3D Max in OpenGL or Software from the Desktop


1. Right-click on the 3D Max icon on the desktop. Select "Properties." In the Program Properties window select the "Shortcut" tab.


2. At the end of the text in the Target box (to the right of the quotation mark) add a space and then type -h. For example, change "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2011\3dsmax.exe" to "C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2011\3dsmax.exe -h." Click "OK."


3. Run 3D Max by double-clicking on the icon on the desktop. The Direct3D Driver Setup window will appear.


4. Select "Revert from Direct3D." Click either "Software," "OpenGL" or "Direct3D" and then select "OK."

5. Double-click the 3D Max icon on the desktop to open the program. Select "Customize" and "Preferences."


6. Click the Viewports tab. Select "Choose Driver" from within the Display Drivers box. The Direct3D Driver Setup window will appear.


7. Select "Revert from Direct3D." Click either "Software," "OpenGL" or "Direct3D" and then select "OK."
