There are those items that are beautiful and decorative for open display, and then there are the necessities that belong hidden behind the doors of a two-door storage cabinet. Purchasing an assembly-required two-door storage cabinet saves the costs of purchasing a fully-assembled model. With a few tools on hand, you'll soon be putting your new storage cabinet to good use. Does this Spark an idea?
Assembling the Closet
Whether assembling a metal or a wood storage cabinet, the approach is basically the same. The first step is to assemble the frame to stabilize the storage cabinet. Grab a Phillips- and flat-head screwdriver and a hammer. Some kits may come with a hex key as the only tool for the job. For wood cabinets, use good quality wood glue as well. Lay out all of the parts and screws, dowels, hinges and other pieces in the kit, matching up all the right screws and hardware to the right parts.
Lay out the two sides of the storage unit in the right orientation -- top edges in the same direction and inside side facing up and back edges next to each other. Insert any specified dowels or hardware into the holes to attach the top and bottom of the storage unit.
Stand one side piece up on its back edge, and line up the top piece of the storage unit to its holes on the side. For wood units, apply a generous amount of wood clue to where these two parts will meet and screw in place for a tight and secure fit. Now that the two perpendicular pieces are stable enough to stand in position, go to the bottom end of the storage unit and attach the bottom piece in the same way as the top. With both the bottom and top in place on one side, line up the other side piece to the opposite ends of the top and bottom and secure in place in the same manner.
Attach the Back
Carefully stand the unit on its side and then lay it down with the back side up. Lay the back panel face down on the back so that the front of it will show through the front when the storage cabinet is open. Line up all the corners with the shelving unit and then screw or nail it to the side, top and bottom panels.
Add the Shelves Inside
Stand the unit upright and insert the shelving supports according to the design specifications of your storage cabinet. Adjust the height of the shelves -- if the unit has this option -- to accommodate what will be stored inside.
Doors, Handle and Lock
It is now time to attach the doors. Mark and drill out holes on the doors for the hinge screws. Screw the hinge plates onto the doors -- one at the top and one at the bottom of each door. Line up the other flap of the hinge to mark and drill holes in the closet's side walls. Screw the door hinges in place onto the storage closet. If holes were pre-drilled for hinges, simply line up the holes with the hinges and screw in place.
After checking that the doors swing out and hang evenly to close without hitting or overlapping the other door, attach the door handle and lock through their pre-drilled holes. Close the door to check that it latches properly. If the handle has a lock or the storage unit has a separate key lock, try out the key to make sure it locks. Once the unit is complete, place your items into your new two-door storage cabinet.
