Install Closet Maid

ClosetMaid® is one of the more popular closet shelving alternatives to wood. This coated wire shelving is available with enough accessories for any homeowner to design a closet storage unit. Installing it doesn't require any more construction knowledge than what it takes to install wood shelves or adjustable shelving. The preformed wire shelving, however, has diversities that wood shelving does not have. Turn the wire shelving over so the lip on the front of the shelf faces up and install it on an angle to store shoe boxes, for example. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Mark the desired height of the shelf on the closet's back wall. Place the carpenter's level on the mark and lightly draw a line on the wall. Locate the studs in the wall with the stud finder and mark them accordingly.

2. Place the wall clips on the marks and install them with the screws provided. Measure the space between the sidewalls of the closet and cut the shelf with bolt cutters or a metal cutting blade and a circular saw.

3. Insert the shelf into the clips, hold it up and put the carpenter's level on it. Level the shelf from front to back and mark the bottom of the wire shelf on the walls.

4. Remove the shelf from the clips. Place the sidewall bracket to match the mark and trace the holes in the brackets on the walls. Drill a pilot hole in the wall if the holes don't hit a stud. The pilot hole must match the drywall anchor needed to support the bracket.

5. Insert the drywall anchor into the pilot holes. Align the holes in the brackets with the anchors and secure them to the walls with the screws provided. Insert the shelf into clips and brackets.
