With a little creativity, you can create a well designed closet on a tight budget. A smart closet design maximizes your space, allows you to easily reach items easily, and stays clean and organized with little effort. Basic carpentry skills will help, but you can design and organize your closet with no carpentry skills or tools and not much money. Does this Spark an idea?
Smart Planning
The first step to any closet design is planning your space. You should measure your closet, then estimate how much space you need for hanging long garments, short garments, and shelf or drawer storage. Write each of these measurements. If you are on a tight budget, be sure measure and write the depth of the closet. You should also consider access to various items and available vertical space. Use graph paper to create an approximate design but remember you may have to change the design as you go.
Go Shopping
Drawer and shelf space is one of the most costly investments in any closet design. This is also where you can save the most. Visit thrift stores, flea markets and Craigslist. Look for chests of drawers, dressers, lingerie cabinets or bookshelves that will fit the space you have. Be sure the piece you buy will fit into the space and work with other elements of your closet design. Once you have key storage pieces in place, consider what else you will need, including shoe storage, hanging racks and organized spaces for accessories. The home organization section of many stores, including Target and Ikea, can provide inexpensive items to meet many closet organization needs. You should also get closet rods and brackets as needed.
Styling Your Closet
Part of having an organized closet is making it look good. If you use vintage or thrift finds, sand and paint them. Choose classic black or white to mesh well with purchased closet organizers or use a fun and whimsical bright color. Install your closet rods, then bring in organizational pieces, starting with the largest first. Once your new closet design is in place, take the time to go through your clothing and accessories and donate whatever you do not use before you bring everything back into your newly organized closet.
