Donating clothing is a charitable endeavor, but first you must find organizations and places that accept gently used clothes. Most large nonprofit organizations have programs to collect clothing donations. By making calls to these groups, you can find out their procedures for getting clothes to those less fortunate, whether by placing clothing in drop-off bins, taking it to a collection center or arranging a pickup.
Instructions
1. Find out which local agencies accept clothing donations. Call the local chapters of nonprofit organizations such as the Salvation Army and the Red Cross to ask if they will take your unwanted clothing. Take the donations to the thrift stores or local chapter sites. Once clothing is dropped off, they either resell it cheaply in thrift stores or give it away to those who are in need due to financial distress or natural disasters.
2. Call veterans' organizations, such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America and the American Legion, and ask if they do clothing collections. Sometimes they undertake specific drives, and pick up donations at your doorstep if you leave out bags and notify them to come collect them.
3. Locate metal drop-off bins. Large retailers and grocery stores allow donation bins to be placed in an out-of-the-way part of their parking lots, and some other nonprofit organizations also have them on-site. Collect your clothing donations in sealed plastic bags and toss them into the drop-off bin of your choice.
4. Ask about clothing drives. Different groups accept donations of specific clothing items, such as winter coats, business attire or formal dresses. Inquire with these organizations to determine what kinds of clothing they will accept and bring your collection of garments to the requested drop-off site.
5. Call homeless shelters to ask if they take clothing donations. Most shelters will accept clothing of all sizes and styles, and might ask for specific items. Bring your donations to the shelter.
6. Contact houses of worship. Many religious groups work with the less fortunate and gladly accept clothing donations as part of their outreach services. Call local places of worship to inquire about donating clothes, which are given to people in need, and ask get the clothing to them.
