Travel With Golf Clubs

A golf getaway vacation can be a great way to relax while sharpening your golf skills at new and challenging golf courses around the world. But how do you ensure your treasured clubs arrive safely at your destination? Follow a few steps to protect your golf clubs while traveling.

Instructions

Packing Your Clubs

1. Place your standard golf bag inside a soft travel bag, available for around $100. Make sure the travel bag has a zippered top to keep the clubs safe inside. Or choose a hard shell case; it's a safer option chosen by the pros, but can cost several hundred dollars.

2. Make sure your woods have head covers to prevent damage while transporting them.

3. Stuff some clothing inside your golf bag to prevent the clubs from banging around.

4. Identify clearly your clubs on the outside with your name and address, just in case they (or you) miss a flight or a connection.

Specific Airline Requirements

5. Check one golf bag aboard Delta flights in place of one piece of luggage. They allow 14 clubs, 12 balls and one pair of shoes inside the bag. If you check a soft-sided golf bag, you will have to sign a limited liability release waiver. You can check a hard shell case or purchase a Delta golf box for $10, and do not need to sign a liability waiver.

6. Substitute one checked golf bag for one piece of luggage for no additional cost aboard United Airlines flights.

7. Bring one checked golf bag in a hard-sided case aboard American Airlines. The weight cannot exceed 70 pounds.

8. Consider that Continental Airlines allows only one golf bag which must be covered or enclosed in a hard shell.

9. Put a cover on your clubs if you're flying Northwest Airlines, because they won't accept clubs without one. Northwest recommends a hard-shell case for your clubs.

10. Take a hard shell travel case or a standard club bag aboard Southwest Airlines.
