Installation Instructions For A Closet Sliding Door

Replacing old sliding doors and installing new doors is one way to update the look of your bedroom and still utilize space effectively. Measure your old doors and purchase doors of the same size, and stain your new doors before installing them in your closet opening. When you remove the existing doors from the closet opening, ensure that there are no leftover nails around the door opening. Once you have the opening prepped and the new doors stained, you're ready to install the sliding door kit. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the top of the door opening between the two sides with a tape measure. Transfer the measurement to the door track and cut the track with a hacksaw. Remove any burrs left by the hacksaw from the end of the track with a file.

2. Hold the track against the inside of the door opening header, enlisting the help of a friend. The header is the top of the door opening. The track should center between the front and back of the header. Place a 4-foot level on the edge of the track to level the track on the header.

3. Mark the mounting holes in the track onto the door opening header with a pencil and ask your helper to remove the track. Drill pilot holes where the marks are with a bit slightly smaller than the diameter of the mounting screws.

4. Place the door track back under the door opening header and secure with the mounting screws and Phillips-head screwdriver. Do not overtighten because this will cause the track to warp.

5. Attach the door roller hardware to the inside top of each sliding door panel. Most manufacturers will either have pre-drilled holes on the panels or will have a template included with the instructions.

6. Grab one of the sliding door panels and insert the rollers into the rear track channel. Grab the other panel and insert the rollers into the front track channel. Slide both panels to one side of the door opening.

7. Place the lower guide under the edge of both panels on the floor. Slide the guide so that door edges are toward the middle of the guide. Mark the mounting holes for the guide onto the floor with a pencil or marker. Remove the guide.

8. Drill pilot holes for the guide mounting screws and secure the guide to the floor with the mounting screws.
