Stage A Closet To Sell A Home

Decluttering a closet can help increase the value of a home.

When you decorate your home with an eye toward selling it, you might forget the hidden areas of your home such as your closet, but the buyer has not. Potential home buyers like to look more closely at a home if they are close to making an offer. Buyers will poke through the nooks and crannies of a home, including opening closet doors and seeing what's inside. Your coat or bedroom closet may seem like a good place for you to temporarily stash clutter, but to a buyer it can make a home feel cramped. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Label each of your three boxes using a marker. One box should be labeled "keep," one should be labeled "toss," and one should be labeled "donate." Remove all items from your closet and sort into one of the three boxes.

2. Hang each in-season clothing item that you are keeping back up on the clothing rod using matching hangers. Turn each piece of clothing so that it faces the same way with the hanger hook turned inward. Pack and store out-of-season clothing items. Do not store boxes in this closet.

3. Remove all items from the floor of your closet. Shoes should be stored in baskets or neatly on shoe racks. Make sure that shoes do not smell by spraying them with deodorizer.

4. Remove storage items from a guest bedroom. Guest bedroom closets should be free of clothing. Hang a few nice hangers so that the closet resembles a closet in a hotel suite.

5. Repair closets so that they appear new. Many closets show the age of a home because they were not renovated along with the rest of a home. Replace missing bars and shelves. Remove outdated wallpaper. Paint over any chipped paint or scuff marks. Sweep the floor and dust all surfaces.

6. Store any items that you use daily in an upright and neat fashion. A closet should resemble a retail store. Group all like-colored clothing and clothing with the same functions together. For example, hang all shirts, pants and skirts in sections together so that all white and light-colored clothing is at one end and all dark-colored clothing is at the other.
