Install Wooden Closet Shelves

Wooden closet shelves add a space for shoes, hats or other closet items. They reduce clutter and stacking of items on the floor and help organize the closet for easier access to the contents of the closet. Position brackets so there are at least three brackets for every 6 feet of shelving. Locate each end bracket 1 foot from the ends of the shelf and one bracket in the middle. Additional brackets are required for longer shelves for the best support. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine the height of the shelves. Mark the location of the bottom of the shelf on the wall.

2. Place a level on the mark and draw a horizontal level line across the location for the width of the shelf.

3. Place an end bracket so the top of the bracket is touching the line for the bottom of the shelf. Use a pencil to mark the location of the screw holes in the bracket on the wall.

4. Screw the bracket into a stud for the strongest support. If a stud cannot be located, move on and install wall anchors.

5. Drill a hole with a drill bit the appropriate size for the wall anchor. The information is printed on the wall anchor package. Push the end of the hollow wall anchor into the drilled hole. Gently tap it into the hole with a hammer. Place the bracket information position over the wall anchor opening. Use a screwdriver bit in a drill or a screwdriver to turn the screw in the hollow wall anchor.

6. Measure the length needed for the wooden closet shelf in the closet. Measure the wooden closet shelf and mark at the length needed with a pencil. If the board needs trimming to fit, use a square to draw a line at the mark and cut with a hand or circular saw. Place the wooden closet shelf on the bracket and hold in position.

7. Push the bracket for the other end of the shelf against the other end of the wooden closet shelf. Place a level on the shelf and slide the other bracket up or down until the shelf is level. Mark the location of the screw holes on the wall with a pencil. Attach the bracket to the wall with screws into a stud or wall anchors. Repeat for additional brackets.

8. Place the wooden closet shelf on the brackets.
