Home Storage Options

If you are having difficulty finding a proper place for all of your possessions, then you probably are living in a home that is in need of some creative reorganization. Figuring out the solution to your storage problems is easy once you know get into the flow of discarding unwanted possessions, rearranging and redesigning your living space to fulfill its optimal storage possibilities. Does this Spark an idea?

Discard and Rearrange

The first step to mastering effective home storage options is to discard all of the unwanted items in your home. While this step is easier said than done, it can be achieved if you break it down into small tasks that you can perform over time. For example, pick one day to eliminate all trash from the house. Go through your house room by room with a trash bag in your hand and place all obvious trash in the bag. Once that task is complete, select another day to gather old clothing, toys and outdated electronics and bring them to a local thrift store. Repeat this process once every season and you will enjoy a virtually clutter-free home.

Next, rearrange your spare rooms or closets to accommodate new storage pieces. Purchase additional hanging rods, over-the-door bags for shoes, closet-ready garment bags for clothes and stackable storage units.

Upcycle

Convert gift, shoe, stationery, jewelry and decorative boxes into storage pieces that can hold important papers and other miscellaneous things that do not have a designated place. You may also use suitcases and heavy-duty plastic bags for extra storage. Use grocery store boxes to line your pantry shelves. Stack canned goods, food boxes and jars in the grocery store boxes to keep them organized. Place older food in front and newer food in back. Avoid overflow by buying only what will fit in the empty spaces in the rear of the boxes.

Replace

Note all areas in your home that have unused space. For example, replace kitchen cabinets that do not reach the ceiling with higher kitchen cabinets. Replace old beds with new beds that have built-in storage spaces beneath the mattress area and shelved headboards. Replace bathroom pedestal sinks with cabinet sinks.

Invest in a large armoire or entertainment center for your living room and consolidate all of your electronics, CDs and DVDs in it. Fill up the additional space with books and decorative items.

Move

Move rarely used appliances, such as ice cream makers, popcorn machines and toaster ovens, to other areas of your house. Invest in a roll cart to easily move them back into the kitchen when ready for use.
