Start A Cabinet Business

Cabinet buying is a large part of the home remodeling business.

Starting a company that sells cabinets can be a lucrative business venture. People are always remodeling their homes and upgrading to newer and more stylish cabinet designs. Particularly in the kitchen and bathroom, this can cost big bucks. Choosing the right cabinets for these spaces is a large part of the remodeling process. With hundreds of configurations, brands and styles (such as laminates, lacquers, hardwoods, veneers, etc.), a cabinet dealer must be prepared before jumping into this business.

Instructions

1. Refresh your knowledge of cabinets. Read up on the latest design trends and what kinds of cabinets people are currently buying. Take note of popular woods and other materials in the cabinet buying industry as well as up-and-coming styles to look out for.

2. Research your competitors. Find out what brands and styles they are selling--and at what prices. Check out their cabinet stores and showrooms and observe the setups. Take note of your competitors' location(s) as this will help you in deciding where to open your cabinet dealership.

3. Secure a location for your cabinet business. Ideally you want a location that is both easily accessible to your customers as well as highly visible to passing traffic. Another aspect to consider in selecting the location is proximity to your competition. If possible, choose a place that is on the other side of town or nowhere near any of your competitors.

4. Obtain a license to do business in the city where your cabinet business is located. The city's finance department or treasurer's office usually handles the issuance of business licenses. Contact the appropriate city hall or the governing offices to get information on where and apply for a license.

5. Acquire insurance and permits needed to run your cabinet business. The business licensing department can help you with finding out what type of insurance and permits are required for your company.

6. Gather inventory. Contact cabinet manufacturers and wholesalers to get the best prices. Purchase a variety of cabinet brands and styles to make your business appealing to a wider range of customers. Try to include brands that are new on the market--those that are not readily available at other stores--as well as popular brands that are. Many customers love being the first to buy the latest model in any industry. If you can become known for always having what's fresh and new in the cabinet industry before the other stores, you will have a competitive edge over the other dealers in town.

7. Promote your new business and build anticipation by posting a large "Coming Soon" banner outside your cabinet store. Market your business with direct mail fliers and local newspaper inserts. As a part of your promotion plans, hold a "Grand Opening" to bring customers into your store.
