Master Closet Ideas

A well-organized closet

Walking into a clean, well-organized closet and finding everything you need quickly may seem like an unobtainable dream for some. Once you've got your master closet organized keep it that way. Always put away items immediately in the proper place. Keep shoes off the floor and on their racks. Keep items that don't belong, like sports equipment, out of the closet. Does this Spark an idea?

Stick With the Seasons

You don't wear long-sleeved wool sweaters on a hot July day so don't keep them in your closet during the summer. Switch out seasonal items and your closet will have more room which means it will stay organized longer. That goes for shoes too. Thongs, sandals and beach flip flops don't get worn in the chilly months of autumn so put them somewhere else. Give the items a thorough cleaning before storing. Air out dry cleaned clothes for a few days to get rid of the fumes before storing. Don't store items you've worn, even if it's been only once. Your body oils and perspiration will damage the fabrics over time.

Organize by Type of Clothing

Put all casual clothes, work clothes and evening clothes together. Then organize by type of clothing such as dresses, skirts, pants, sports coats and suits within the category. Separate suits and put the skirt with the skirts and pants with the pants. You'll be more likely to see new pairings that stretch your clothing options rather than always wearing the separates together. Within the type of clothing such as tops, organize by color and then by long sleeve, short sleeve and sleeveless.

Fold When Possible

Many items like sweaters should be folded rather than hung. Hanging sweaters pulls them out of shape. Fold jeans, T-shirts and tank tops as well. Keep these items in drawers and out of the closet. Or stack them on the shelves. Use hanging closet organizers to increase the amount of shelve space.

Store Once in Awhile Items

Put that Christmas sweater, holiday ball gown, formal wear and other items you only wear once or twice a year somewhere other than the master bedroom closet. Invest in a zippered clothing bag and keep the items dust free in a spare bedroom, attic or basement. Tuck the shoes and accessories that go with the outfits in the bottom of the bag. Of course make sure wherever you store the clothing is dry and clean.

Use the Walls

Attach hooks and shelving to the walls of the closet to store belts, scarves, and jewelry you wear on a regular basis. Seeing the accessories will remind you to wear them. Hanging necklaces don't tangle as they do in a jewelry box. Use the back of the door for storing items as well.
