Craft Organization Ideas

Craft Room

Repurposing used furniture as organization for your craft supplies is an attractive, eco-friendly and inexpensive solution. You can use a changing table as shelving, a chest of drawers for vertical storage and transform an entertainment center into wrapping paper organization. Does this Spark an idea?

Shelving

Find a baby changing table at a yard sale or thrift store and use it as shelving to organize your craft supplies. The top shelf is likely the most sturdy of the three, so place your heavier items on top. You can line the two bottom shelves with baskets for compartmentalized organization; you could also use plastic trays and boxes to store your craft supplies. If floor space is at a premium in your craft room, store the shelving in the closet. Most changing tables are narrow enough to fit inside a standard double closet. Organize your supplies by how often you access them, as well as by weight. Removing items from the back of the bottom shelf is not as easy as plucking them from the first or the second shelf, especially if your shelves are in the closet.

Drawers

Bedroom furniture, like a chest or drawers, a dresser or a nightstand, works for craft supply storage and organization as well as for clothing. Whether you have a designated craft room or you take advantage of the furniture in the spare bedroom, you can't beat the appearance and the utility of a good chest of drawers. These are more items that you can easily and inexpensively find at local thrift stores and yard sales. Get crafty with the furniture pieces for your craft room and try your hand at decorative painting, crackling or decoupage. Drawer organization is perfect for sewing patterns, sketch pads and scrapbooking supplies; you can compartmentalize your drawers with plastic trays for bead storage or cookie tins for art supplies.

Cabinets

Transform an entertainment center into a gift wrap and fabric organization station as well as closed cabinet storage. You can add dowels across the width of the television opening to store rolls of wrapping paper or bolts of fabric. Many entertainment centers have a row of shelves beside the television opening; add thin vertical dowels to create compartments in which to store on end your stained glass. It's easy to add dowels to wood pieces; cut them to size and attach them with an L bracket. You can organize more craft supplies in the cabinet beneath the television opening, like a pasta machine and your other clay supplies. This is also a good place to store your essential or aromatic oils, as they should be kept from the light.
