Make the most of wall space in a small apartment.
In small apartments, organization can be a challenge. Even needed items take up valuable space. By installing systems that make the most of limited square footage, you can eliminate clutter, which can make a small space look smaller. As you plan your organization, identify spots that are underutilized and turn them into functional space.
Maximize Wall Space
Make the most of your wall area, without taking up limited floor space, by hanging floating shelves around your apartment; use them to keep clutter at bay. Make shelves even more useful by installing hooks on the bottom of the shelf to hang jewelry, towels, scarves, purses or even utensils.
In the kitchen, install peg boards or rows of hooks on the wall to organize pots and pans, and don't forget the unused space on the back of doors and sides of cabinets.
Closet Space
In a small apartment, closets are often the only options for hidden storage. Make your closet perform double duty by installing extra organization systems. Move your current closet rod up and install a second closet rod at waist level; hang shoe holders from the rods to organize shoes, purses or folded clothing. If your closet has a top shelf, fill it with "stackable" boxes to make the space more useful. Piles of boxes can maximize the tall area and give you a way to organize items you don't use often.
Multi-Functional Furniture
To create hidden ways to organize your belongings without adding extra pieces, buy furniture that has built-in storage. Use an old trunk as a coffee table, buy hollow upholstered cubes that double as magazine or blanket storage and extra seating and look for bed frames that have bookshelves in the base or headboard. Instead of a traditional bench in the hall, use a hollow version to organize shoes and outdoor gear, and add fabric skirts to tables for hidden organization.
Bookshelves and Panels
One of the challenges of a small apartment is finding room to organize the items that you don't want visible. If you don't have the money or desire to add a large, bulky wardrobe, make your own hidden storage. Choose the end of a long room and put a tension rod on the wall in front of the area. Hang fabric panels from the ceiling to the floor and use the space behind it to organize large or unsightly items. Place a narrow bookshelf in the space to store smaller items, stack luggage or put sporting goods on.
