Office storage does not need to be complicated.
Albert Einstein once said, "Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity." However, he also stated, "If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, what's an empty desk a sign of?" The key to office storage is finding a solution that will allow you to have easy access to the materials you need without having the items take up precious space.
Use the Vertical Space
When considering office storage solutions, remember to take advantage of the vertical space in your office. Instead of purchasing cabinets or shelves that are as tall as your neck or waist, purchase office storage furniture that is tall. Alternatively, if you want to purchase shorter cabinets or shelving units but still want to maximize the vertical space in your office, install shelves above the piece of furniture. On the taller shelves, place items you do not necessarily need to use to get your work done or things you do not use often. Such items may include a framed diploma, certificates, books or awards.
Hidden Storage
Create a workstation and storage solution in your office where you can place non-essential items out of sight but still within your reach. Purchase a sturdy utility table and find file cabinets and shelving units, including units whose shelves pull out, that fit under the table. Then, install a curtain around the table to hide your file cabinets and shelves from view. For example, keep the computer monitor, keyboard and mouse on top of the table, but place the printer on a pullout shelf.
Extra Desk Storage
If your desk or worktable is against a wall, stack a short shelf on top of it to create more options and free up space on your work surface, or purchase a ready-made desk that comes with shelves. Line the shelves with different boxes, such as those used to store photos, so you can store items such as pens, notepads and business cards.
Wall Space
Turn wall space into storage space by hanging magnetic dry erase boards that allow you to jot down notes and secure them to the wall with magnets. You can also hang metal racks meant for the inside of kitchen cabinets as a way to organize different notebooks or papers. Another wall storage option includes using a wall-mounted mailbox. Mount the mailbox next to a desk or attach them to the side of a file cabinet with magnets as a way to store documents you use often or need to put away.
