Fix The Top Track Of Sliding Closet Doors

The top tracks guide sliding closet doors, making them a key component in the functioning of the doors. If the top tracks are loose, bent or otherwise damaged, you are likely to notice problems with the doors. Potential problems include doors falling off the tracks, not sliding properly or rubbing together. Adjustments to the top tracks allow the rollers on the doors to move smoothly. If the tracks are beyond repair, replacement is an option. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Roll the doors along the tracks slowly. Note where the doors stick, come off the tracks or slow. Focus on those areas of the tracks when looking for damage.

2. Remove the doors from the tracks. Lift the doors so the rollers come out of the tracks. Set the doors aside while you perform the repairs.

3. Inspect the tracks to look for bent areas. Assess the degree of damage to the tracks to determine if you are able to make the repair. Look for obstructions such as a popped screw that might affect the sliding of the doors. Clean out the tracks with a vacuum or rag.

4. Place a level along the tracks to ensure they are installed properly. Remove screws and adjust the level if it isn't even. If the tracks are level, tighten the screws to ensure they are installed tightly. Tightening the tracks is often useful if the doors are sticking.

5. Bend the tracks back to the original shape using pliers. Use caution to avoid bending the tracks too far and weakening them. Use a hammer to gently pound the tracks back into shape if necessary.

6. Lift the doors back in position to test the repairs you made to the tracks. Slide the doors along the tracks to check for functionality.

7. Unscrew the tracks if you need to replace them. Screw new tracks into position, using a level to make sure they are evenly installed.
