Family Room Closet Storage Ideas

A decorative wardrobe can serve as a closet for a family room.

The average family room becomes the place in the home where everyone gathers. While family togetherness is always a good idea, these spaces often serve as the catch-all for family clutter. Often family rooms lack a traditional closet space, requiring home owners to develop their own storage method within the space. The key to developing family room storage is to keep an open mind and allow yourself to be creative. Does this Spark an idea?

Wardrobe

According to the Better Homes and Gardens website, a wall unit wardrobe can function as a closet in a family room that lacks storage space. Tuck a wardrobe into the corner to house books, magazines, family games, play toys and even remote controls. Another benefit to adding a wooden wardrobe to the family room is that they can be easily customized to reflect the room’s d cor. Consider stenciling a design on the wardrobe doors or painting the piece a bright, funky color. Use the top of the piece to display family photos or knick-knacks.

Shelving Wall

A wardrobe is not the only way to develop a faux-closet in the family room. The Country Living website recommends building out one entire wall with shelving units. Egg-crate shelving can be used to create a wall full of small box-like shelves. This creates an instant focal point in the room and also provides a significant amount of storage. Place books, magazines and games into the wooden shelves. Additionally, the shelving units can be used to store extra blankets and pillows. For unsightly items, consider adding doors or fabric curtains to sections of the shelving units. Keep some of the shelves free for display items in the space.

Chests and Window Seats

In rooms where it is not possible to build a traditional closet, think about horizontal storage options. Horizontal storage options, such as a large chest can provide excellent storage options for the clutter that collect in family living spaces, according to the Home Organizing Ideas website. Build a window seat with storage underneath along the windows in a family room. Use a large chest as a coffee table or along the wall. Pack away items that take up space to create a virtual, horizontal closet space in the family room.
