Label shelves and containers so family members can find them.
Linen closets are a convenient place to store household items as well as linens. Often, these storage spaces also are used for extra toiletries, cleaners and medicines. With so many things kept in a linen closet, it is easy for one to become crammed full and cluttered. By dedicating a bit of time and energy, you can have a neat, tidy and efficient linen closet. Does this Spark an idea?
Get Organized
By first removing everything from the linen closet, you will be able to take a visual inventory of what you have. Separate everything into piles by type, then by room. For example, group all sheets together, then divide depending on which room they are used in. You may have piles of towels, sheets, blankets, toiletries, and ironing and cleaning supplies.
Prepare the Closet
With the closet emptied out, give it a good cleaning. Combine 1 cup white distilled vinegar, 1 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup ammonia and 1 gallon warm water in a bucket. Using a clean rag, wipe the shelves, walls and door to remove dirt and grime without damaging woodwork or paint. Allow surfaces to dry. Vacuum or sweep the floor and line shelves with shelf paper.
Fill the Closet
Methodically fill the closet by neatly folding all linens and placing sheet sets into one pillowcase of the set to keep everything together. Leave room above each stack for air circulation. Remove packaging from items like toilet paper so they can be stacked efficiently. Place medicines, toiletries and other small items into baskets or containers. Collect cleaning supplies in buckets or caddies so they can be taken out easily all at once.
Additional Storage
If you have large tablecloths or heirloom linens, consider installing a rod on the door for items to hang over and reduce fold lines. Place acid-free paper between each item to make it easy to remove an item and use it more frequently. Alternately, install an organizer that hangs on the inside of the door to store smaller items and toiletries.
