Whether you're setting up an office in a spare bedroom, converting a residence for business use or simply outfitting a storage closet, a set of shelves can help you keep your office space neat and your tools easy to access. A closet to shelf conversion is surprisingly easy in relation to how much use you'll get out of the modified space. Set aside an afternoon to finish this job. It will probably take less time, but you want to give yourself a cushion to get it right. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the width of your storage closet.
2. Cut one half-by-one inch wooden strip and two one-by-12 inch wooden planks with a power saw to match the length you measured in Step 1.
3. Cut two half-by-one inch wooden strips to a length of 24 inches with a power saw.
4. Set the strip cut to match the width of the closet against the back wall of your alcove at the height where you want the shelf. If you plan to do multiple shelves, work from low to high for easiest installation.
5. Use a level to make sure the wood strip lays flush. Nail the strip in place with a nail gun, driving one nail into each corner.
6. Set a 24-inch strip in a corner, running perpendicular to and level with the strip you just mounted. Nail it in place as you did the longer strip. Repeat to mount the other 24-inch strip on the opposite wall.
7. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for any additional shelves you want to mount.
8. Locate the studs in your closet wall with stud finder. Mark them with a pencil near where each strip is mounted.
9. Nail through each strip at every point where they cross a wall stud, using a nail gun. Although this should be sufficient for most storage, consider using wood screws if you plan to store especially heavy items on these shelves.
10. Set two planks side by side on each of the layers of strips you've mounted. Although you can mount these to the strips, the structure of these shelves means you shouldn't have to.
