Wire shelving is an economical and easy way to add shelving to closets, pantries, laundry rooms, utility rooms and garages. Shelving is available at almost any length and is often cut to fit exact spaces. It comes in both close and large gap variations, depending on shelving need, and is available in several finishes, or you may spray paint it to meet your home's décor. This shelving is sold in pre-cut kits with all attachments and clips included or in individual pieces to meet specific shelving needs. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure the length of the space where the shelf is needed. If the shelf is intended to touch the wall on either end, subtract 3/4 inch from the measurement. Double that if it will touch on both ends.
2. Determine the number of wall clips needed to hold the back end of the shelf to the wall. A good rule is one clip for every 12 inches of shelf length, evenly spaced.
3. Position clips 2-1/2 inches from each end if the edges are close to the walls, and mark their locations with a pencil. Mark the clips at 1 inch from the edge if not near sidewalls. Use a level to make sure all holes are positioned in a straight line.
4. If mounting clips into studs, simply drill a pilot hole, and attach with screws. If securing into drywall, tap wall anchor clips into the pilot holes, and screw them into the wall.
5. Attach the shelf to the wall clips one at a time by gently pushing the back bar of the shelf into the clips until they snap into place. It will now hang there against the wall, and you can place plastic caps over all open wire ends if necessary.
6. For shelves close to walls, end brackets are used and come in both regular and wall anchor varieties. Rest the front end of the shelf inside the bracket, check that it's level, mark the location with a pencil and drill pilot holes. Attach the brackets with screws, and slip the shelf into place.
7. For shelves not near end walls, attach a support brace to one side, following precise instructions for position on the shelf from the manufacturer. Check for level while holding the brace against the wall, and mark the drill holes. Drill pilot holes, use anchors if no stud is available and position the shelf on the finished braces.
