Install A Wooden Closet Pole

Add a wooden closet pole to increase your closet's hanging capacity.

It seems like there is never enough space in closets for hanging clothes. By adding a wooden closet rod to a bare closet yourself, you can increase hanging space and save money by not having to hire a carpenter. You can add a second closet rod below an existing one that is 6 feet from the floor or higher and double your hanging capacity. Closet rods can also be installed in laundry rooms to hang clothes right as they come out of the dryer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the depth of closet with a measuring tape. Make a pencil mark on the wall at exactly half this measurement. Locate the nearest wall stud to the center mark with a stud finder and make a pencil mark. Measure the height from the floor for the desired rod height (a minimum of 42 inches) and make an intersecting pencil mark at the wall stud mark, as this is where the closet rod hardware will be installed. Repeat this step for both the left and right side of the closet.

2. Hold the center mounting hole in a closet rod pole socket directly over the intersecting marks on one side of the closet. Secure the socket to the wall with a 2-inch wood screw driven in with a power drill that has a Phillips bit installed.

3. Hold the remaining closet rod pole socket to the intersecting marks on the other side of the closet, making sure the open end of the socket is facing upwards. Secure the socket to the wall by driving a 2-inch wood screw into the mounting hole with a power drill.

4. Measure the width of the closet between the two closet rod sockets. Transfer this measurement to a wooden closet rod and make a pencil mark. Cut the rod to length with a hand saw.

5. Insert one end of the rod at an angle into the rod socket that does not have an opening at the top. Lower the other end of the rod into the socket that does have an opening. Pull down slightly on the rod to ensure it is fully seated into both sockets.
