Closet organizing systems can make the most of your space.
In most rooms, an 8-foot-long closet takes up a good portion of the wall. Whether or not you have enough clothing to fill the closet, you can design it to make the best use of the space. Whether you use a closet organizing system or create a dual-purpose room, it can keep your closet from getting disorganized. Does this Spark an idea?
Below the Bar
For many people, an 8-foot-long hanging clothing bar is unnecessary; even if you use the entire horizontal space, the area under the clothing is usually underutilized. Instead of allowing the space to go unused, fill it with organizers. Install hanging organizers pushed to one side of the closet and use them to store folded clothing, shoes or accessories. You can also push in a tall, narrow dresser to serve the same purpose. Other possibilities include shoe racks on the floor or even a second hanging bar halfway to the floor if your 8-foot bar is not long enough for all the shirts and other short pieces of clothing.
Closet Door Design
When you have a large closet, the doors can take up a good part of the wall. Put them to use to make the closet more efficient. You might use over-the-door organizers to hold shoes, purses and accessories, for example, or hang art prints on swinging doors. Make your room look bigger by installing mirrors on the doors; install frosted stripes for a sophisticated look and to reduce the brightness. You can also hang a sliding curtain from floor to ceiling over the door to conceal it and add a pop of color.
Office Nook
In a small room, make your closet do double duty by turning part of it into an office nook. Split the closet in half and put up a hanging divider that runs from the floor to the top shelf. Use half of the closet for your clothing. In the other half, install a wide shelf to act as a desk. Put shelves and a bulletin board above the desk and push in a stool that can fit under the desk. A closet office is particularly useful when you don't have much floor space or when you have a particularly small room.
Upper Shelves
In many closets, the area above the top shelf in a closet often goes unused. To make the best use of the space, install shelves all the way to the ceiling. You can use them to store out-of-season clothes in stackable plastic containers or to store things you don't want out in the open.
