There are things you can include in a room remodel that can add extra value to your home. A great way to add some elegance to a room you are remodeling is to install a set of double doors. You don't have to hire a specialist to install them. This project is something that you can do on your own with a few tools and by following these simple steps. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Measure to make sure you have enough space for your new double door frame. The space for the new doors should be one inch wider and a half-inch taller than the frame. Also make sure the new door jamb is the correct size. Door jambs come in a width of 4 9/16 inches or 6 9/16 inches.
2. Place your new door frame in the wall. Slide it into place bottom-first, and then tilt it up until it is in the correct upright position. Make sure the jambs are flush with the wall.
3. Use your level to make sure the top of the door frame is level. When you get it in place, hammer it in securely using the 4d nails. Place the nails about every half-foot or so apart as you go along the top of the door frame.
4. Hold the level on one side of the frame. Hammer in wood shims between the wall and the frame until the side of the frame is level. Once you have aligned it, drive the 8d nails through the frame, shims and partially into the wall stud to secure. Do this at both hinge locations and in the center of the frame. Repeat on the other side.
5. Operate the doors and make sure they can shut, stay closed, are level and have a 1/8-inch gap between them and the door frame. If they don't, pull out the 8d nails in the frame and adjust. Once they have achieved all of these criteria, drive the nails all the way into the side of the frame.
6. When the frame is in place, add shims at every foot down each side of the frame. Cut the wall shims so they are even with the wall.
