Design A Smart Home

Solar power conserves fossil fuels.

Built from sustainable, low-maintenance materials, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly, a "smart" home design integrates space and systems into the structure for improved safety, comfort, and convenience. A smart home is equipped with structured wiring that encourages homeowners to remotely program or control a wide array of automated home electronic appliances and devices. A homeowner at work or on vacation can enter a single command to control temperature gauges, arm a home security system, control lighting, program a home entertainment system, or control lighting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Research climate trends, temperature extremes, rainfall, and ground water reserves that apply to your building site. Design a home that is situated to take advantage of prevailing winds, sunlight, and elevation. Working with the contours of the land, rather than against it, will save time, excavation costs, and preserve the integrity of the terrain.

2. A smart home connects and automates electronic appliances.

Determine the electronic features you wish to incorporate into your home. Home protection, including fire, burglar, and medical alarms, can be wired and programmed to be armed remotely. Obtain estimates for several different types of systems and compare features, convenience, and ease of operation. Provide adequate wiring capacity to accommodate additions and updates to your electronic requirements.

3. Explore ways to incorporate innovative technology into the home design. A smart home designed to minimize home maintenance and maximize efficiency can be both functional and beautiful. When emphasizing natural elements in harmony with the earth, smart home designs often include a system to harvest rainwater and harness the solar heating capabilities of the sun.

4. Maximize the efficiency of your living space. Design direct access to the kitchen area from the garage. Bedrooms should be isolated to decrease noise and provide privacy. Make sure all doorways, hallways, and entryways are large enough to facilitate furniture movement and possible future handicap needs.
