The laundry must be done, so make your laundry room as pleasant as possible.
While it may not be the most glamorous area of your home, the laundry room is an often-used space, and it deserves thoughtful planning. Laundry rooms don’t have to be drab, grim or uninteresting places. Whether you devote an entire room to laundry or you need to squeeze it into a hallway or closet-sized space, some basic laundry room design concepts can help enhance your space. Does this Spark an idea?
Hide The Space
Use any style of cabinets to hide a washer and dryer.
If the space available for a washer and dry is limited, hiding them may be the best design solution. Accordion doors are easy to add to a closet-sized area or to a space carved out of a hallway near to bedrooms, but any type of door or cabinet will work. Hide just the washer and dryer in lower cabinets and leave an area for folding clothes and closed cabinet shelving above, or use floor-to-ceiling doors to hide the entire area. Stacked appliances, one on top of the other, save the most room.
Dedicate A Room
A dedicated laundry room allows for ample floor space that is sometimes necessary.
If space allows, a dedicated laundry room allows another person to assist with laundry tasks or just to keep you company. Moreover, having a separate room offers an opportunity to create a cheerful and personal space that makes even the task of doing laundry more enjoyable. Begin with the basics, including an area for folding clothes, shelving next to the appliances where laundry soap can be stored behind closed doors and space in baskets or bins to separate colored clothes, whites, and hand-washables. Add additional elements for other related chores, such as a sink for soaking or doing hand-washing, an ironing board and a retractable clothesline to hang hand-washables.
Add Decorative Elements
Use a cheerful picture like this one to brighten your laundry room.
Adding a light-colored coat of paint and small or large decorative elements makes the space all your own and brightens a dedicated laundry room or even just a closet space. Pictures, decorative charts with stain-removal tips or an old washboard take up just a small amount of wall space and will fit either a laundry nook or a laundry room. If you have a laundry room, add a bright, graphic-designed rug and some plants on the windowsills that thrive in humid air, such as orchids, ferns or bromeliads.
