Make the most of wall space with shelving.
The first step in keeping a tidy home is getting organized, and you can't get organized without designating a storage space for all of your belongings. In a small house or apartment, storage space can run out quickly, so you'll need to get clever to make the most of the space you have. With a little thinking outside the box, even a very small space can store a large amount of stuff. Does this Spark an idea?
Furniture Storage
Furniture that doubles as storage provides two things at once while keeping your stored items out of sight. Ottomans that double as trunks, chairs with built-in drawers and sofas with compartments built into the back will all house your items while serving as furniture you would need anyway. If you have children, a trundle bed provides an out-of-the-way extra sleeping space for friends.
Wine Racks
Wine racks don't need to be just for wine. Re-purpose one as a towel rack. Hang it on the wall in the bathroom, or set it on top of a small table and tuck rolled-up towels in the wine holders. This is a useful solution for bathrooms without closet space or adequate floor space for a dresser or bureau for extra towels. Wine racks work well for shoes too, especially if you have a large collection of flats or sandals.
Magnetic Paint
Magnetic paint creates a refrigeratorlike art board out of any surface in your house. Since doors are often unused space, paint yours with magnetic paint and use it to display art, report cards or photographs. Hang metal hooks from magnetic paint for dish towels or for organizing your jewelry.
Vertical Shelving
Even if you don't have a large amount of wall space for shelving, vertical shelves that stretch from floor to ceiling will provide storage space without impinging on wall space. Include baskets on shelves for items that can't be stacked, and alternate what you store --- a basket for baubles, books, a small statuette --- for visual interest.
