Use a tape measure and level to layout the position of shelf standards.
If properly aligned and fastened, shelf standards provide the basis for sturdy, stable storage -- especially when they're connected to studs. Even better, shelf standard brackets slip in and out of the standard's slots to adjust the height of the shelf. Standards attach to surfaces with screws. With the right tools, the do-it-yourselfer can install shelf standards on wood, drywall and masonry walls. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Hold a shelf standard against the wall and butt a level against the side of the standard. Adjust the position of the standard until the level indicates a straight-up-and-down position, referred to in construction as "plumb." Press a pencil through the shelf standard's screw holes and create a mark on the wall at the center of each screw hole.
2. Place a tape measure on top of a screw hole mark, stretch the tape to the desired location of the second shelf standard and use a pencil to mark the second standard's location on the wall. Hold a level against the second standard's mark, align the level in a plumb position and draw a plumb line across the wall to represent the position of the second shelf standard.
3. Hold the level against the wall in a level, horizontal position. Position one end of the level over one of the first shelf standard's screw hole marks and the opposite end of the level over the plumb line that represents the second shelf standard. Use a pencil to create a mark on the second standard's plumb line that corresponds to the first standard's screw hole. Repeat for each of the screw holes.
4. Align the first shelf standard over its screw hole marks. Use a power drill equipped with a driver bit to drive screws through the standard and into the screw hole marks. Align the second standard over its screw hole marks and fasten with a power drill. Latch standard brackets into both standards and place shelving material on the brackets.
