Fix Up Old Wooden Closet Doors With Varnish

Make your closet doors look like new.

If the doors on your closet have seen better days, you can give them new life and make them look like new. Refinishing and varnishing your closet doors can restore their good looks, and save you the money you would've spent to buy new doors. All you need is some time, a few simple tools and some hard work. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a stable surface. A set of sawhorses is perfect for this purpose.

2. Use a screwdriver to remove doorknob, hinges and other hardware from the door. Set the door hardware aside in a safe place for later use.

3. Sand the flat areas of the closet door to remove any existing paint, stain and varnish. Use a hand sander to make the door as smooth as possible. Start out with a rough, large-grain sandpaper to remove as much of the old surface as possible. Work your way down to finer and finer sandpaper until the flat surfaces of the door are completely smooth. Clean away the dust each time you change sandpaper grades on your sander.

4. Scrape the moldings to remove existing paint, varnish and stain. Use a hand scraper until the moldings are cleaned of previous paint.

5. Use a shop vacuum to clear away any dust. Hand sand the door until it's smooth, then clear away the dust again. Use a fine grain sandpaper to hand sand the door. Continue sanding the door until it's smooth and free of its old paint, stain or varnish.

6. Rehang the door, then reattach the doorknobs and hardware you removed earlier. Apply the first coat of varnish, using a wide paintbrush and brushing with the grain of the wood. Use a finer paint brush to get varnish into the corners and along the trim. Follow the directions on the package regarding drying times, then apply additional coats of varnish as needed.
