Remove Closet Doors & Hang Curtains

Closet door curtains

Many people with small spaces choose to remove the closet doors from their closets. In place of the doors, they hang curtains. Curtains are space-saving, and do not pinch the fingers of children when they are moved. Removing closet doors and hanging curtains is a straightforward project. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Determine how your closet door is attached to the closet. Some doors may be attached with hinges, while others simply hang on an overhead track. Use a screwdriver to remove the hinges from hinged closet doors. Doors on a track can be lifted from the track and set aside.

2. Measure the width of the closet with a measuring tape. The curtain rod should extend about 5 inches past the edge of the closet door frame. This means the rod brackets should be placed 2 inches above and to the side of the door frame. Use the measuring tape to measure out 2 inches from edge of the door frame. Mark the measurement with a pencil. Measure 2 inches above the first mark. This will be where the bracket is screwed into the wall.

3. Check to see if your marks on the wall are level. Recruit a couple of partners to hold the rod in place on the marks you made on the wall. Hold a level on top of the rod to determine if the rod will be level once installed on the marks. If not, you will need to adjust your marks on the wall until the rod is level.

4. Use a drill bit to make small holes in the wall where the rod brackets will be screwed into place. Drilling the pilot holes will tell you if there is a stud in the wall where you want to hang the curtain rod. If there is not a stud in the wall, gently tap plastic drywall anchors into the holes with a hammer.

5. Screw the rod hardware into place on the wall with a screwdriver and screws.

6. Place the curtains on the curtain rod. Use a partner to help you hang the curtain rod on the hardware above the closet. Adjust the curtains on the rod until you are happy with the look.
