Fixing closet doors is easy if you have basic do-it-yourself skills.

Fixing those closet doors requires only a small amount of time, as well as the patience to get it done right once and for all. So if you want to make those closets like new again, and are tired of struggling to open and close the doors, take this repair and put it at the top of your to-do list. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Bifold Closet Doors

1. Open the door and loosen the screw in the top mounting bracket near the corner of the door. Slide it to the left or right to adjust the position of the door until it is straight and plumb with the doorjamb. Next, tighten the screw once it's properly adjusted. The only issue here is the alignment of the door itself. This is due to the way the door is hung.

2. Reposition the door by lifting it up and moving the bottom pivot on the floor bracket by the corner of the door, if necessary. Move the door closer to the doorjamb if it slants toward the center of the closet, or move it away from the doorjamb if it slants toward the doorjamb.

3. Replace the pivots, hinges or brackets on the door and doorjamb as needed. To remove the top pivots, unscrew them from the jamb with a screwdriver and replace them with matching pivots. To remove the bottom brackets, unscrew them from the side of the doorjamb, using a screwdriver, and replace them with new ones.

4. Remove broken handles or door nobs by unscrewing the mounting screw with a power screwdriver, or by turning the handle itself until it comes off the door. Replace it with a new handle or knob. Put wood glue on the end of the mounting screw and fasten the knob or handle to the door in the same mounting hole.

Sliding Closet Doors

5. Clean out the track to a pair of sliding closet doors by vacuuming up any dirt and wiping away larger debris with a brush.

6. Lift the door up and out of the track, and set it down on a flat surface.

7. Remove the roller wheels by unscrewing the bottom plate. Replace the rollers with new wheels from the hardware store.

8. Set the door back into the track and operate it. If the problem persists, remove the door, unscrew the track from the floor and replace it with a new track. If the old track is bent or damaged, the doors will not work properly.
