Baby Room Ideas
for Twins
Making room for two newborns in the same house? Although it's true that planning for twins takes a little more thought than planning for a singleton, decorating a nursery for two needn't be overwhelming. Here's what you need to know to have the nursery ready by the time your two beautiful children arrive. Does this Spark an idea?
Two Rooms?
Some parents are afraid that if their twins sleep in the same room, one will wake up the other. However, many parents actually find their twins sleep better when they are near each other. After all, that's what they were used to nine months in the womb.
Another problem with separate bedrooms is parent fatigue. If you switch bedrooms each time you give a feeding, change a diaper or change the children's clothes, you'll be doing a lot more work.
How Much Extra Room?
If you decide to stick to one room for the nursery, you're probably concerned about cramping everyone's style. However, you don't need two of everything. You'll only need one dresser/changing table, one rocker and one diaper pail, and while you might consider an extra baby swing and playpen, they don't necessarily have to be in the nursery.
Cribs
The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend letting twin babies sleep together, thinking it may increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). On the other hand, some studies indicate the vital signs of twins are actually better when they sleep together. Nonetheless, practicalities may get in the way of co-sleeping. As your babies age, their crib will get awfully crowded.
If you decide to use two cribs, you might put them head-to-foot. This gives your twins the comfort of being near each other, but also makes it easy for you to get to your babies.
Another idea is to use a crib made just for twins. One of the most popular twin cribs is designed much like bunk beds, while another is two circles attached to each other. Just note whether or not you'll have to purchase special bedding to fit these cribs.
Choosing a Theme
Noah's Ark, with the animals entering two by two, and "Two Peas in a Pod" are popular and easy-to-pull-together themes for twins. For a boy and girl, "Jack and Jill" is a cute choice, as well.
Modern tastes often dictate gender-neutral colors, and this works especially well if your twins are of the opposite sex. Excellent neutral color choices include yellows, greens and browns.
Plan Ahead
It's a good idea for all parents of twins to plan ahead when decorating the nursery. Eventually, your children may want two separate spaces. And there's little doubt you'll need lots of storage space. So look for wall shelving (preferably in even numbers, so each child can have the same number of shelving as his or her twin), toy organizers, baskets and bins and a good closet organizer. Incorporate them now, and having two toddlers in the same room will be easier later.
