Create Your Own Closet Design

Adding drawers is usually an excellent idea for a clothes closet.

The time you invest in creating a good closet system will save you many hours in the future. Locating needed items will make getting dressed and storing items move along faster. If you're able to design an entire closet from scratch, you're especially fortunate. Take your time as you plan that closet, and be as detailed as possible. Design the closet to use every square inch. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure the floor space you plan to use for your closet. Plan for hanging rods, shelves, drawers and hooks. In a small room, plan a 2-foot-deep closet. If your room is larger, plan one that's at least 3 feet deep.

2. Picture the closet with no doors. Use graph paper to define sections for multiple shelves and three-drawer chest units, for instance. Visit a home-improvement store to get ideas for your layout. Go online, as well. But always keep your own particular needs in mind.

3. Allow for tracking for folding doors that can open the entire closet space. Buy quality tracking and hardware, so the doors can be opened and closed easily. Purchase heavy-duty folding doors made of vinyl-covered wood panels. Try to avoid louvered doors, because they tend to become dust catchers.

4. Paint the closet interior and all components. Use one neutral color, such as beige. Buy plenty of bins and baskets to store miscellaneous items. Label each box, bin or basket to identify what's inside.

5. Install recessed lighting in the closet ceiling, or add recessed or track lighting in front of the closet, along the ceiling in the bedroom. Take care if you add fixtures inside the closet. They cannot come in contact with any flammable objects.
